December Things

As we launch into December, many are still recovering from Thanksgiving and planning for Christmas, Hannukkah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Boxing Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day and whatever else.

There is usually a crazed frenzy when many are shopping not only for gifts but for food and for also for a good hang out or vacation spot. The good news is that during this season, many of the less fortunate are more remembered and they are blessed by many. Some of them must wish that every month was December. This month as you celebrate whatever you are accustomed to, I ask that you pause to reflect on the less fortunate from a different view. Not just to pack them with food and clothes this season, but ask yourselves what you can do to get them out of their current situation. How can you be a part of the plan to move them away from their situation.

I realize that you are probably looking for a fix to know that you have blessed someone this season. And, that you are doing - you are indeed blessing others by giving the warm blankets, the socks, the food and all the other noteworthy and well appreciated items. My point is that while all of this is great - what happens to these folks after December has come and gone? Do they realize that there is a better way and that there are things that they can do to get themselves on a different path.

As you give this month, think about whether you can include a note of encouragement and motivation, a referral for job training, or referral to actual jobs or a course. Anything that will bring them away from their situation and on the journey to doing life better. It may be a small act but it can certainly go a very long way. How are you going to give this season? Is it for the giving high or to transform the lives of others. You take your pick!
